Here is a list of tools and materials needed for distressing. There is no particular order because each item will be used for different methods. There's a good chance you will already have some of these in your home. If not, most of these are very cheap and easy to obtain. Make note that every single item listed is not needed and every item below can be mixed or applied differently.

Say goodbye to hunting for expensive antiques;

Paint – It's recommended to get two or more colours for your project.

Paintbrushes – Using multiple paintbrushes is recommended for using different colours. While one brush is drying after being cleaned, you can use a fresh brush to add the other coat of paint once the paint dries.

Paint remover or stripper – Use this to remove or wipe away some existing paint. This is for unwanted damage.

Sandpaper – Another way to remove paint or finish. Can also b used as a base for the finish.

Nails, metal sheets, hammers and chains – These can all be used to make deliberate but convincing, irregular surface damage.

Finishing coats or stains – There are many kinds of finishing stains and coats. You can go chemical or natural when choosing a finish.

Steel wool – this has multiple uses, from removing a finish, contributing to a finish or just causing some damage to the wood.

Cloths – Also have multiple uses such as adding paint, coats, removers, stain effects and wiping down surfaces.

Sanding methods

Sanding is an interesting way to get a good weathered look going. Not a lot of extra tools or chemicals are needed to distress with sanding.

Probably the easiest method to get the distressed furniture look. For the bare-bone minimum in distressing, you can pick up some sandpaper from your local hardware shop.

Using sandpaper requires some elbow grease and a good amount of time. With this simple method, you are able to achieve a more subtle look. When using sandpaper only, it's recommended to distress small furnishing. Let's go for a small bedside table;

Take your sandpaper

Start slowly on the areas you want to be weathered

Over time apply less pressure outward from the point of where you are sanding

Once you have the desired effect, repeat process in other areas

Electric sander

A slightly pricier option, think of the above solution but done much quicker. You can really get some heavy-duty sanding done with this. This option is not only for creating the worn effect but contributes to the finishing process.

If you're looking to save time, this is the option for you. Larger pieces are better suited for this method but anything with a wooden surface would do. A 240 grit is recommended to start out with. You can move up to more coarse grits one you get a feel for your sander.

Layered paint method

The layered paint method is a fun, colourful way to distress your furniture. You may already have a bunch of paint lying around at home to get yourself started. We'll look at adding multiple layers then distressing the piece to give it an interesting two-colour effect.

Neutral but colourful paints are recommended to first start out with. Nothing too mute or loud, but a nice in-between for your selection.

Cover your piece in the first layer then wait for it to dry. Let your paint completely dry out for 24 hours. Clean the paint from your brush and have a fresh one ready.

Once your first coat is dry, select a fresh brush and apply a second coat. Repeating the process in the first step.

(optional) If you want a third coat, repeat the steps above.

When your final coat is completely dry, grab a sheet of sandpaper or an electric sander. Depending on the size, how many layers applied and what look you are going for, be mindful of how much you distress. Sand down until all two colours ( or three ) colours come in to view.

Finally, you have the option to use a finish for preservation or stains. For a better more worn look, you can skip the finisher and let your wood further age naturally.

Damage method

When you think the distressed furniture look, usually worn, tear and damage is most likely to come to mind. Or maybe, aggressively sanding down a wooden wardrobe. Over time furniture is going to get damaged, could be during a big move or a household accident. When we distress our furniture, the least popular option is causing serious damage to your furniture.

Here are some quick tips you can use when you are in the process of distressing your furnishings;

A bag of nails or the thin end of a hammer can make for some interesting effects. Try getting the bag of nails and wacking ( yes, wacking ) the wooden surface areas. You can use the thin end of a hammer to create gashes in a tables' legs. Depending on the durability of the wood, you may need to apply heavier hits.

For larger, less noticeable dents, try using a thick chain. This can create some uneven effects you often see in distressed furniture.

Small, sharp metal sheets are great for creating these small cuts and splits on wood products. These sheets are also great for shaving areas where you may want to go asymmetrical.

BE VERY CAREFUL when you are carrying out these tasks. Accidents can easily happen at any moment, so be sure you handle your tools and bee mindful with these damaging methods.

Annie Stevens is also known for being one of the top London interior decorators. After attending Fettes College she then went on to receive a BA in English, at the University of York. Annie went on to work for the famous Nina Campbell. Nina being another well respected interior designer in the field.

She worked for and trained with Nina Campbell for several years. This is right before setting up her own business. In 1984, Annie began her interior design services under the name of Annie Stevens Designs. This is where she works closely with a team of talented, designers, architects and craftsmen.

The founder of Annie Stevens Design has been interior designing for over 30 years. Her work was long and successful, specializing in residential design work for various UK clients and abroad. Her passion for design grew to heights where she volunteered at the British Institute of Interior Design. So much so, she became the Council Director as well as President of the BIID.

1930's House

Located in London at the Edwardian house, this is Annie's spacious 1930's house project. A beautiful contemporary living setting with a modern aesthetic. This included ceiling design, light walls, and colorful furniture. The London interior designer included, mixed and matched various styles. Her choices flowed nicely throughout the house.

It has an integral garage and modern patio set surrounded decorative, botanical life. The 1930s house' architecture allowed more modernized refurbishment without disturbing the original features.

1970s Town House

This project is a good example of the 60 30 10 rule in interior design. White is being the dominant colour and a hard red being the tertiary 10th. The 1970s town house is has a strong modern, Scandinavian theme with a very clean, breathy atmosphere.

A house in the 70s that was in need of landscaping and a lick of paint, Annie Stevens was up to the task. The transformation started by replacing the exterior colour of yellow brick to ash grey. Next, the London designer would add interior decor cladding to the staircase and floors. Finishing up with a stunning coat of white paint.

Belgravia Mews

The Belgravia Mews is a medium-sized, three storey, traditional brick house in one of London's many districts. Another big task for the London interior designer. This property has undergone a complete interior and exterior transition into the modern age.

An interior design project that spanned for a year, the London interior designer had her work cut out. The results, of course, were stunning. Featuring an Italian kitchen, white oiled oak floors that were weathered and mother of pearl mosaics.

Vicky: How would you describe your style?

Annie Stevens: In terms of design for other people, there isn't a firm mark, as no two people are the same. My personal style is minimalist. I like things that are simple and practical, although I run riot in the garden.

Vicky: What are your top tips for sprucing up a home on a budget?

Annie Stevens: Get the windows cleaned! People underestimate what a difference cleaning can make, but it really can transform somewhere. Redistributing furniture can also make a difference, as can a good clear out – if in doubt, chuck it out! I also find that people tend to get mesmerised by things having to be modern. The art is mixing...don't be scared! It's also advisable to get advice from a professional – that way, you can avoid expensive mistakes.

Knauf Plasterboard | Knauf Drywall

Origin of Knauf Plasterboard

Knuaf plasterboard is name after the company that manufactures the defective drywall. Knauf is a drywall manufacturer in China that exported enough Knauf plasterboard to build 100,000 homes. This plasterboard appears to be centered around the coastal ports into which it arrived. Many of the cases of Knauf plasterboard are located in Florida, around the port of Miami. Other concentrations are in Virginia Beach and the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The Gulf coast area appears to have been a two-fold victim. The hurricanes that caused dramatic destruction throughout the region also caused a shortage of building materials. In order to repair buildings that had been damaged, Knauf plasterboard was imported to replace domestic drywall that was in short supply. The building supply shortages were witnessed throughout the country and Chinese drywall has been reported in more than 40 states. The majority of the cases involve homes built between 2001 and 2008.

Drywall manufacturer Knauf has been widely linked to the Chinese drywall problem. The fact that Knauf has been linked as a manufacturer, however, does not exclude other companies. There are other companies, aside from Knauf, are involved.

The defective drywall must be removed and properly discarded. In the process of removing wall boards please note that the Ceiling boards may not need to be replaced, if the boards are 5/8 inch thickness.

Although some building codes required contractors to hang the 5/8 board most did not. And for that reason it is best to know the size board used in the ceiling construction. Note: The CPSC has always said that the issue of defective drywall pertains to the 1/2 inch boards, not the 5/8 boards; Not sure of their reasoning. However it is a saving grace when it comes to doing a total remediation.

The CPSC revised Interim guidance on a remediation process for homes affected by reactive drywall are not nearly as servere as previously recommededed.

Chinese drywall remediation is the process of removing the defective drywall from the home and replacing it with domestic drywall. In order to remediate Chinese drywall, the first step is to remove the defective drywall. Prior to that, it is easy to understand the other tasks that will be needed to complete in order to accomplish this task.

Cabinets must be removed also. Removing Chinese drywall reveals behind the wall mechanicals.

It is recommended duct cleaning be an intergal part of the process. There are a few good duct cleaning companies around that will do an excellant job. Replacement of the HVAC equipment is a must since that is what is effected the most.

Most new homes were built with PVC plumbing, which is not affected by defective drywall, however the copper tails that come out of the water heater need to be replaced. The most significant controversy as it applies to Chinese drywall remediation involves the electrical wiring.

Without a doubt, copper is dramatically affected by the gases produced by defective drywall, however the CPSC now concludes that the basic electrical wiring can stay. It will need to be cleaned and the blackish coating removed. Electrical sockets also need to be replaced with new ones. Most important are the ground wires that take the brunt of Hs2 and display the most corrossion. Cleaning as much of the copper ground wires will sufice.

Only the areas where the insulation has been removed – where the wiring ties into outlets, switches, the panel box, etc – would need to be repaired. These repairs could involves simply cutting off the corroded ends and re-terminating the wiring or cleaning the ends of their corrosion. Theoretically, the remainder of the wiring is protected by the insulation and was not exposed to the corrosive gases.

The issues caused byChinese sheet rockare not covered by the insurance typically carried by home owners.Insurance companies are relying on two specific clauses to deny coverage for Chinese sheet rock damages. First slow decay and gradual corrosion in a home would not typically be covered as those situations are classified as normal wear and tear. In homes that are affected by defective sheet rock the insurance companies also deny coverage based on a clause that excludes any issues resulting from material defects or pollution. In fact some insurance companies are dropping or not renewing coverage if the insured files a claim forChinese drywall. This corrosive indoor air environment attacks the copper that is installed as wiring in a typical home. Before this problem sheet rock was installed the electrician installed copper wire to each room in the home. The copper wiring links switches outlets and lights. Each year house fires result in many deaths nationwide. What are the dangers of Chinese sheet rock? Additionallythere areseveral otherChinesedrywall problems. The gas that causes the corrosive environment also causes adverse health effects. When the sulfur gas emitted combines with latent humidity it creates hydrogen sulfide. Identified by the government as hazardous to human health hydrogen sulfide exposure has been limited by several government groups. Although the government has not established the results of extended exposure to this gas it has established that the adult exposure limit is no more than 10 minutes at levels that do not exceed 10 parts per million (ppm). Several owners report that the first signs ofChinese sheet rock is a rotten egg smell. The human nose can first detect this smell at a concentration of 40 parts per billion. Although this concentration is substantially less than the government set exposure level the length of exposure is significantly longer. Occupants of homes affected by problem sheet rock could be expected to be exposed to this gas for 8-12 hours per day. That duration is 60 times the duration studied by the government. Additionally there are no recommendations for a safe exposure limit for infants and children. Anissuerelated to toxic drywall is the production of carbon disulfide. This gas is known to affect central nervous health cardiovascular health and reproductive health. Government-set exposure limits for carbon disulfide is just 1 ppm 10% of the safe short term exposure for hydrogen sulfide. Like hydrogen sulfide the carbon disulfide long term issues are not known. The short term exposure limits for carbon disulfide are based on how the gas affects the central nervous cardiovascular and reproductive systems. The problems caused byChinese sheet rockare huge. Drywall Inspection Drywall inspection is a new concept. Until the Chinese drywall was discovered drywall had always been an innocuous building material. Now a drywall inspection is an absolute requirement on any home that was builtbetween 2001 and 2008. The ramifications of not having a drywall inspection prior to buying a home are potentially devastating. The risks associated with continuing to live in a home affected by Chinese drywall without having aChinese drywall inspectioncan be debilitating. There are several types of drywall inspection. Make sure to insist on an inspection that is guaranteed. A comprehensive and guaranteed drywall inspection makes it possible to move forward with a purchase or continue living in your home without worry. Types of Drywall Inspection Visual Drywall Inspection Several methods ofChinese drywall inspectionhave been developed. The most basic version is a simple visual inspection. A visual drywall inspection involves the identification of specific signs and symptoms of defective drywall. Typically the inspector will look for corroded copper wiring corroded air conditioning coils and stamps/branding of drywall boards. The combination of these symptoms may be useful in a drywall inspection but the result of an visual inspection only confirms that there was no outward sign of defective drywall at the time of the inspection. The subjective nature of visual drywall inspection is also a concern. Varying degrees of corrosion may be evident depending on the conditions within the home. Homes in areas of low humidity seem to be slower to manifest the corrosion that is typically associated with Chinese drywall. In addition other conditions can cause corrosion within a home. Homes that are vacant for extended periods of time may be exposed to sewer gas which over time can contribute to corrosion. A visual drywall inspection will not be able to identify the difference. Air Sampling Drywall Inspection Air sampling as a means of drywall inspection has obvious flaws. Though it incorporates a more scientific and quantifiable approach it does not render accurate and reliable results. This method of drywall inspection is hugely impacted by the immediate conditions at the time of the inspection. Open windows and doors air conditioning and occupant traffic can all affect the results of an air sample drywall inspections.
